Despite calls for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to be stripped of their titles following the release of Netflix's "Harry & Meghan" documentary series, it is unlikely that King Charles will ever take such action, according to royal insiders.
Critics of the couple have said that they should lose their titles after the first three episodes of the series revealed more about their unhappy life behind palace walls. British journalist and TV presenter Piers Morgan tweeted: “King Charles needs to strip these two poisonous rats of all remaining titles and ties to the Royal Family and needs to do it fast before they destroy the monarchy”.
However, a royal expert said that stripping them of their titles would be too punitive and would only lead to the Sussexes claiming it was retaliation and proof that they were never wanted in the royal family.
“It would only lead to the Sussexes claiming that it was a retaliatory action and proof they were never wanted in the royal family,” reported PageSix.
“Stripping their title is not something the king would likely ever consider … mostly because it would be too petty and punitive”. The Sussexes were conferred the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles by the late Queen Elizabeth Ii on their wedding day, May 19, 2018.
Despite the tension that has arisen between the couple and the royal family in recent months, it is unlikely that the king will take action to strip them of their titles.
Harry and Meghan
Since stepping back from royal duties, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have faced criticism for their decision to work with Netflix on a documentary series about their lives.
The first three episodes of the series were released last week and generated significant viewing time on the streaming service. The second installment of the series is set to be released this week and is expected to reveal more about the couple's decision to step back from royal duties and move to the United States.
Despite the controversy surrounding the couple, it is unlikely that King Charles will strip them of their titles. Even if the Sussexes were stripped of their titles, Markle would end up with another honorary title, according to the royal protocol: Princess Henry, as only princesses born into the royal family, are allowed to use their names. A woman who marries into a princess title, such as Princess Michael of Kent, takes her husband's name.
