American former professional basketball player, Larry Joe Bird was born in West Baden Springs, Indiana, on December 7, 1956, and raised in nearby French Lick, where he started playing basketball at an early age. Bird attended Springs Valley High School in French Lick and graduated in 1974. At the time, he was involved in the school’s basketball team and became the all-time leading scorer.

Larry received a scholarship at the Indiana University where he played for legendary coach Bob Knight. He joined Indiana University to play for the Hoosier but a month later, he dropped out of college as he found it’s difficult to adjust with new people. So he returned home and enrolled at Northwood Institute in West Baden.

Before transferring to  Indiana State University in Terre Haute in 1975, he worked municipal jobs for a year. He played for the Sycamores to the NCAA championship game against the Michigan State Spartans.

Larry Bird played basketball for Indiana University for three years. In 1978, he was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 6th overall pick in Round but did not sign with the Celtics. Instead, he played a final season at Indiana State and led the Sycamores to the NCAA title game.

Then he signed a five years, $3.25 million contract with the Celtics, and making him the highest paid rookie in league history. Larry started at small forward and power forward for thirteen seasons for the Celtics. He was 12 times NBA All-Star and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player three times in 1982.

From 1984 to 1986, the former basketball player was named d the NBA’s MVP. His career hit a milestone after reaching 20,000 points. In 1992, for the first time, the USA sent professional athletes to the Olympic Games. In the year 1997, he accepted the post as a head coach with the Indiana Pacers. Despite having no experience, he led the Pacers to a 58-24 record during the 1997-98 season and was named the NBA Coach of the Year.

He resigned the coaching position shortly after the end of 2000 season. After three years, in 2003, the Pacers hired Bird as the President of Basketball Operations. During the 2011-12 season, he was titled NBA Executive of the Year, the one and only person to be named the NBA’s MVP, Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year. Meanwhile, he announced his post as team president in the summer of 2013.
