Russel is a second child of Harrison Benajmin Wilson III, a lawyer and Tammy Wilson, a legal nurse consultant. Wilson was born at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati and grew up with two siblings: an elder brother Harrison IV, and a younger sister, Anna in Richmond, Virginia.
Wilson went to Collegiate School, a preparatory school in Richmond Virginia for his high school graduation. He completed his Bachelors graduation in Communication through North Carolina State University in only three years.
However, Wilson’s thirst of education does not end here. He joined University of Wisconsin-Madison for his Masters on Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. For his excellent performance in classroom, the university awarded him with the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award in 2011.

In 2011 summer, he played 61 games in total with three home runs with 15 RBIs and abatting average of .228.
February 7, 2018, Wilson was traded from Rangers to the New York Yankees. Growing up as a Yankees fan, it was a great honor for Russel to war the uniform.
On March 2, Wilson played as a pinch-hitter for Aaron Judge in fifth inning against Atlanta Braves. This was his first appearance in a professional Baseball game since in 2011.
