Early Life

Nelly’s full name is Cornell Iral Haynes Jr was born on November 2, 1974, in Austin, Texas to Cornell Haynes Sr. and Rhonda Mack. He raised with two younger brothers named Chaz and Nijel.

When he was just seven, his parents departed. Later he moved with his mother from St. Louis to University City, Missouri as a teenager.

While he was studying in high school, he became a member of the hip-hop group called “St. Lunatics.” The group gained some success in 1996 after that the band released their single “Gimme What You Got” but didn’t stick.

Later he decided to become a solo artist and signed to Universal Music Record in 1999.

Career as a Rapper

Nelly’s debut album Country Grammar dropped out in 2000 which becomes a huge hit. The album included hits Country Grammar, E.I and Ride Wit Me. It debuted at topped three on the Billboard 200 and went nine-times platinum.

Following year, Nelly joined St. Lunatics and the group released their first album Free City which went platinum in the USA. Then he came out with his second album Nellyville in 2002. The album charted at No.1 and was nominated for album of the year at the 2003 Grammy Awards.

Nellyville went six-times platinum, its first single Hot in Herre was a hit and won the Grammy Award for best male rap solo performance in 2003. Other singles from Nellyville, including Dilemma, Air Force Ones, Work It featuring big names such as Justin Timberlake, Murphy Lee, Kelly Rowland, and the St. Lunatics.

Nelly released a remix album titled Da Derrty Versions: The Reinvention before releasing his two more albums Sweat and Suit in 2004. His third album topped on the Billboard chart and Sweat debuted at No.2 on the US Billboard 200.

The following year, the rapper released a compilation album Sweatsuit which consists of tracks from 2004’s Sweat and Suit. It spawned three tracks, Grillz, Flap Your Wings, and My Place. 

Nelly’s fifth studio album Brass Knuckles released in 2008 which debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200. The highest charting single Party People peaked at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another two singles; Stepped on My J’z and Body on Me reached at No. 90 and No. 42, respectively.

Nelly dropped the album 5.0 featuring the hit singles Just a Dream, Move That Body, and Gone is the sequel to Nelly’s 2002 number-one single “Dilemma.”

Nelly released his first official solo mixtape album O.E.MO, which stands for “On Everything MO” featuring T.I., 2 Chainz, St. Lunatics and Bei Maejor. The album peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200 and sold 23,000 copies. His seventh studio album M.O. released in 2013.

As of 2018, the ‘Dilemma’ rapper signed to Columbia Records and currently, he is working on his upcoming eighth studio album.

Apart from rapping, he tried his hand in the entertainment industry and debut his role as Prolifk in 2001 movies Snipes. He played in some movies, The Longest Yard, Reach Me, A Fall From Grace as supporting roles.

Nelly also played on small screen as Terrence Davis on The World Series of Poker and CSI: NY from 2008-09.  He has appeared on several TV shows including T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle, Real Husbands of Hollywood, and also runs his own show called Nellyville from 2014-15.

Nelly Was Arrested For Sexual Assualt

A 21-year-old student of the University of Washington accused Nelly that he raped her on a tour bus in late 2017. He was arrested and later released from the police custody as authorities continue to further investigation.

His lawyer denounced the lawsuit as being “motivated by greed” and said his client would countersue.
