After twenty years, the Canadian swimmer, Mark Tewksbury revealed about his sexuality as “gay” at Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times Theatres on December 15, 1998. The swimmer told that his life has transformed 100% in the last 20 years.

His family reacted emotionally to his sexuality. At the time, he felt a little bit uncomfortable so he decided to keep it in himself but his parents always supported him.

Later, he found his soulmate, Rob Mabee through a mutual friend’s dinner party in 2008. Mark and Rob both were good friends before they fell in love.

As of now, Mark and his partner Rob is living the same apartment as a couple but they are not married yet. The duo dated almost a decade but they haven’t shown any sign of getting married very soon. The two has one thing common that they share the same fitness goals and encourage each other while working out. Mabee is an art curator.

Career as a Swimmer

Mark Tewksbury is an Olympics champion swimmer whose first shot at competitive swimming was at Seoul, South Korea at the Summer Olympics of 1988 and won the Silver Medal. The next Summer Olympics was held in Barcelona after four years later in 1992, he gave all his efforts and won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke in the world.

This led him to get into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as well as Canada’s Olympic and Sports Hall of fame. After the Barcelona games, Mark retired from competitive swimming and also featured on the cover of Time magazine.

After the retirement, Tewksburg worked as an athlete representative with an IOC representative. In 198, he came out as a gay and subsequently lost a six-figure contract as a motivational speaker due to he was “too openly gay.”

Moreover, he is also known for raising voice for LGBTQ+ community. He became a prominent advocate for gay right and causes in Canada and joined the abroad of directors for 2006 World Outgames as co-president in Montreal.

Apart from that, he worked on several television networks. Tewksbury was the narrator for the TV show How It’s Made during the first season. Presently, he is working as a motivational speaker.

In 2008 Summer Olympics, he worked for CBC Sports as swimming analyst along with play-by-play announcer, Steve Armitage. In the year of 2010, Mark Tewksbury was named the chef de mission of the 2012 Canadian Summer Olympic team.

Mark is a member of the board of the Gay and Lesbian Athletics Foundation. Mark presented his gold medal to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights for an exhibit promoting the power of sport for the positive change in Winnipeg.
