Isha Sesay is a British news anchor, Broadcast journalist, and correspondent. She is best known as the host of CNN NewsCenter and BackStory. Isha worked as an anchor and correspondent for CNN International from 2005 till August 2018, quitting the job.
Before working for CNN, she has worked as a co-anchor of HLN’s Evening Express, however, it only ran for few weeks during 2012 before getting canceled. She has been active in the career of journalism since 1998.
Early life, Childhood, and Education of Isha Sesay
Isha Sesay was born in Bordeaux, France on January 6, 1976. Her birth name is Isha Isatu Sesay. Isha Sesay ethnic background is Sierra Leonean. She was born to Mamud Sesay and Dr. Kadi Sesay. By profession, her father was a legal Advisor at Sierra Leone Produce Marketing Board.
And her mother was a lecturer at Fourah Bay College located in Freetown, Sierra Leone. As she was born in France, until the age of seven she lived there but then, Isha along with her whole family flew back to Sierra Leone. Isha was raised in the family of the Muslim faith.
Talking about her education, she attended Fourah Bay College located in Sierra Leone, the same college where her mother was a lecturer. Later in 1992, she went to the UK to further continue her studies. She did her A-levels in the UK, then joined Trinity College, Cambridge taking an English major in order to pursue journalism.
Isha Sesay’s Career
Isha Sesay has been following a career in journalism from the year 1998. Soon after the completion of her college, she started to develop skills needed in the journalism field. Then, she began working with the camera. After researching on Kilroy from a BBC talk show, she later joined BBC Scotland in 1998 working behind the scene.
However, she decided to work on screen and became TV announcer of “BBC Choice Show”. After gaining some experience and confidence working on-screen, she later worked for big companies like CNN and TWI. She got hired by the Sky UK in March 2002 for the Sky Sports News as the anchor of Good Morning Sports Fan.
Then, she was also seen as the anchor of ITV Morning News from the ITN’s show. After years of hard work she finally got her big break in 2005 to work at CNN International, one of the most prestigious news channel in the world. At that time, she covered the Nigerian Presidential election campaign from the year 2007 and also introduced Global Elders in South Africa.
And in 2009, she was the host of the International Desk, a weekday news program. Two years later in 2011, she became the presenter of BackStory, after swapping the roles with Michael Holme. The same year, she was assigned as the presenter for the show called “Anderson Cooper 360°”.
The following year, she became the anchor of CNN NewsCenter. In 2012, she also worked as co-anchor of HLN’s Evening Express but just for a while. After 13 years of good memories with CNN, she came to the end and she is set for a bigger goal. A goal which is the future is female and the future is Africa.

“I’ve been at CNN for 13 years, it’s the end of a huge chapter,” Sesay explains. “It’s been such a tremendous time, such an eventful 13 years — I feel like I grew up working there. I showed up as a 30-year-old in 2005, with two suitcases and a one-year contract — I’ve managed to make that last 13 years! It’s been amazing, I’ve been married when I was there, divorced when I was there, it’s all happened.”
Isha Sesa has her own nonprofit organization called “W.E. Can Lead” in Sierra Leone which has already helped hundreds of girls and is working even vigorously for the better future of the girls and of Africa. She is also currently working on her book about the Chibok girls. It is about the incident that happened back in 2014 where 276 young Chibok girls were kidnapped in Nigeria by Boko Haram.
